Yesterday my friend told me that her daughter had gulped down 10 glasses of water all at once and was very sick. We are always lead to believe that water is good for us but you can have too much. Water intoxication can be fatal as it dilutes the sodium in your bloodstream and causes a disturbance in brain function although this is very rare.

It is recommended that men drink 3 litres a day and women 2 litres. How much do you drink?

My parents always told me never to drink water in a standing position and always drink water in a sitting position and gently take a sip. They told me never to rush to pour water down my throat in hurry. I never asked why when was a kid, but as grew older, I discovered that they had a reason. When you gulp water hurridly, water will block airways and you will choke. How much water you should drink depends on your working routine, location, weather, etc.

I drink plenty of water throughout a day, though I don't think I've ever actually given it a thought as to how much. I've been making more of a conscious effort to drink more water, because I'd gotten myself onto a kick of drinking diet soda, and that was just bad. So I try to drink as much water as I can, and it is a decent amount, but I couldn't give you any kind of estimate as to quantity.

I've also always been conscious about water intake since I heard about this particular incident many years ago, and it's stuck with me ever since: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/woman-dies-after-water-drinking-contest/

On my estimate I have been drinking 2 liters of water in a day plus the Coke, usually 1 can but sometimes 2 cans. I have heard of this water intoxication but not exactly that term. I believe that the problem caused by excessive water in the stomach is the bloating that interferes with the breathing. It can be likened to an acidic stomach that produces gas that sometimes would reach the throat. In my case it is the over-eating that gives me the problem so I control my food intake.

When I was in high school, one of my mates threw up after trying to gulp two, half-litre bottles of water. It was a dare that went wrong. I believe it was because he took too much, too fast.

Your daughter drank the 10 glasses of water in one setting. It's not proper. Either you will be bloated or vomited.

Did you let your daughter see your family doctor? What's the diagnose? Don't tell me your tap water is treated by chlorine? If it is, that would be one of the causes?

It wasn't my daughter, it was my friend's 13 year old daughter. She had just eaten a heavy meal and then drank 10 cups of water so I think she had just overloaded her stomach. She has learned by it now and knows not to do it again.
