I guess this topic is the most difficult to answer because many have tried and many have failed. This is not to brag but I did the quitting in one day and after a month that's when I declared that I am free from nicotine addiction. The thing is something happened to me - chest pains that I thought I would die. I prayed fervently and promised that if I live then I would stop smoking. That was morning. The pain persisted until early evening and only after dinner did the pains left me. That night I repeated my vow and the rest is history.
I have never smoked nor has anyone in my family so I am not really sure, but I can tell you one thing, that if you can distract yourself with some thing that you really really enjoy, maybe you can take your mind off of smoking. Or meditate and build your will power so you will yourself to give up smoking.
In my experience and knowledge, the best way to quit smoking is to avoid loneliness. When you are alone, your urge becomes strong, and when you are in company your mind will be occupied and you will forget your urge.
I will suggest you find other things that makes you have fun. Once you can get that, you spend more time on doing it. And in time you try to forget smoking hopefully.
Most people that have nicotine addiction find it hard to quit, but some are quite successful doing it through vaping and have never tried to smoke again.
