Just wanted to share a bit of knowledge on this as I have always enjoyed some medicine aspects of Chemistry. Cis-Platin is medication used to treat numerous types of cancer. [Pt(NH3)2Cl2] is it's molecular formula.
Another form of this molecule exists with the same molecular formula but different chemical structure called Trans-Platin. However, it is highly toxic and other reasons mean that it is not used.
Here is a picture of the two different molecules:
It works by stopping the DNA in cancer cells from replicating. Here is another picture to demonstrate the cis-platin binding onto 2 DNA molecules (cis-platin has been rotated to show it though):
As mentioned, this in turn prevents DNA replication which if located in cancerous cells can stop it from spreading.
Downsides to this drug as with any anti-cancer drug is that it has the potential to do the same to healthy cells through attacking their DNA too which creates major side effects.
